About Louis Gonzales
Dr. Louis Gonzales is a retired educator, published author and former CEO of several non-for-profit urban organizations in the Southwest and Midwest where as a seasoned, results-oriented manager, coach and educational consultant, he developed great strategies for getting the most out of limited financial resources.
As a youth, Dr. Gonzales survived several gang-active communities in Los Angeles, California where he worked hard to balance the ethics and values of education and those of the gang culture. Even then, his skills as a writer and public speaker were apparent in the ease with which he was able to negotiate his way through several cultural and social obstacles. In 1965, educators and civic leaders alike were so impressed with his work that they offered him a small scholarship (his ticket out) to attend the local community college.
He then attended Cal State University-Fullerton where he received a B.A. in English and a Masters Degree in Counseling and Psychology. His extensive work with high risk youth and education later earned him a Doctorate degree in Urban Education from Columbia Pacific University. He went on to become a consultant to federal, state and local agencies addressing issues relating to gang prevention and safe communities. Dr. Gonzales has also published the titles Gang-Free Zones and Positive School Climate and is a sought-after speaker on topics relating to entrepreneurship, urban education, and school crime and violence.
Dr. Gonzales integrates his streetwise frugal skills with his psychology background and Zen philosophy to successfully translate much of he has learned from the public and private sectors into similarly effective principles for men coming to grips with retirement in his book Zen and the Art of Retirement.
He lives in Wayzata, Minnesota with his wife, Merle. He has four wonderful children and, to his surprise…a cat.
